The quick answer

What size should an Instagram Reel be?

Make Reels 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical frame, as an MP4 or MOV under 4 GB. Keep them to 3 minutes: longer Reels can be uploaded, up to 20 minutes on many accounts, but Instagram doesn’t recommend them to people who don’t follow you. Anything narrower than 1080 pixels can look soft.

Where it showsShapeWhat people see
Reels tab (full screen)9:16 · 1080 × 1920The whole frame, with the caption and buttons on top
Main feed4:5 crop · 1080 × 1350The middle of the frame until someone taps to watch
Profile grid3:4 crop · 1080 × 1440The middle of the cover, with the top and bottom cut

Instagram raised Reels from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in January 2025 and moved the profile grid to 3:4 rectangles. Longer uploads of up to 20 minutes have been rolling out since late 2025, and availability varies by account.

What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?

Keep text, logos and faces out of the top 14% and the bottom 35% of the frame, and about 6% in from each side. The app header sits at the top and the caption, username and audio cover the bottom. The like, comment, share and save buttons also climb the right edge from about 37% of the height, so keep the lower right clear too.

The 35% bottom margin is Meta’s guidance and is deliberately generous. The username and a one-line caption usually cover the bottom 12–15%, but a longer caption grows upwards when someone taps it, and Reels ads add a call-to-action button. Turn on Safe zone in the checker to see the areas on your own video, or download the template as a guide layer for CapCut, Canva or Premiere.

The first impression

What size is an Instagram Reel cover?

Make the cover 1080 × 1920 pixels, the same as the Reel. Your profile grid shows a 3:4 crop from the middle, so keep the title inside the central 1080 × 1440 area, and the feed shows a 4:5 crop of the video itself.

Pause your video in the checker on the frame you want and click Save this frame as a cover. Then, in Instagram, tap Edit cover and choose it from your camera roll.

Saving Reels

How do you download an Instagram Reel?

Open the Reel in the Instagram app, tap the share icon and choose Download. It works for Reels from public accounts when the creator allows downloads, and the saved video carries the creator’s handle as a watermark. Pineable doesn’t download Reels from links.

Tap share

On the Reel, tap the paper-plane icon.

Choose Download

If you don’t see it, the creator has turned downloads off or the account is private.

Your own Reels

Download your own Reels from the same menu, or keep the original file you edited.
