What is the best font for YouTube thumbnails?
The best thumbnail fonts are heavy, simple and slightly condensed, so a few big words stay readable when the thumbnail is shrunk on a phone. Anton, Bebas Neue, Montserrat ExtraBold, League Spartan and Bangers are popular free choices. Impact is the classic, but it comes with Windows and Mac rather than Google Fonts.

How big should text be on a YouTube thumbnail?
Big enough to read when the thumbnail is about 170 pixels wide, which is how it appears in Up next and on many phones. In practice, that means three to five words in a heavy weight, with letters roughly a sixth of the image height or more. The default here, 120 pixels on a 1280 × 720 canvas, is a good place to start.

Where should text go on a YouTube thumbnail?
Put text in the top or left part of the thumbnail, and keep the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube covers that corner with the video length, and adds a red progress bar along the bottom once someone has started watching.
If there's a face, put the text on the opposite side so neither covers the other. Turn on “Show YouTube timestamp” above to check your layout.

How do you use these fonts in Canva, Photoshop or CapCut?
The quickest way is to click “Download text only” above. You get your styled text as a transparent PNG that you can drop onto any thumbnail or video. To edit the text later, install the font itself instead.
- In CanvaMany Google Fonts, including Anton, Bebas Neue and Montserrat, are already in Canva's font menu. Select a text box and search for the name.
- In Photoshop or PhotopeaDownload the font from Google Fonts, then double-click the file to install it. Restart Photoshop and it appears in the font list. Photopea lets you load the file directly.
- In CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci ResolveInstall the font on your computer the same way, or import the transparent PNG as an image layer above your video.
Mistakes to avoid
Why is my thumbnail text hard to read?
The font is too thin or too fancy
Script, handwritten and light fonts look great large and turn to mush small. Save them for one accent word, if at all.
There are too many words
A sentence shrinks every letter. Cut it to the hook and let the video title do the explaining.
Text blends into the background
Busy photos swallow text. Add an outline or shadow, or put the words on a solid sticker. The Outline slider above fixes most cases.
Words sit under the timestamp
Anything in the bottom-right corner is hidden by the video length. Move it up or to the left.

Thumbnail font FAQ
What font does YouTube use?
YouTube's website and apps use Roboto for most text. Its logo and brand material use YouTube Sans, which isn't available for creators to download. Neither is a typical thumbnail font: thumbnails need something heavier.
Should every thumbnail use the same font?
Using one font and one layout across a series makes your videos recognisable in the feed. Pick one display font, and at most one more for small labels. Click “Save as my style” to reuse your settings next time.
Can I use these fonts commercially?
Yes. All suggested fonts are free Google Fonts, licensed for commercial use, including on monetised videos.
Can I upload the font from my brand guidelines?
Yes. Upload a TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 file up to 5 MB. It loads in your browser only and isn't sent to Pineable.
What size are the downloads?
1280 × 720 PNG files, a 16:9 size YouTube accepts. Use the thumbnail size checker to test a finished image against all of YouTube's rules.
